A U.S. Air Force plane hit a concrete barrier on Wednesday while attempting to take off during a training exercise in the Philippines.

Philippine officials told the Associated Press that the exercise involved the aircraft landing on and taking off from an alternate landing zone that was done in coordination with Philippine authorities.

Local police said the pilot and two American personnel were brought to the hospital for treatment with two other injured personnel treated at the site.

“One of the individuals has been discharged while the other remains in medical care and is in stable condition,” the Hawaii-based command said, adding that no civilians were injured, Associated Press added.

In recent years, large-scale exercises have focused on Philippine defence in the South China Sea, with tensions between the Philippines and China intensifying over the disputed waters.
