U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said President Donald Trump prefers diplomacy over military action to persuade Iran not to produce nuclear weapons, while acknowledging the difficult process.

“Now, we’re dealing with radical Shia clerics, okay? We’re dealing with people who make geopolitical decisions on the basis of pure theology, and it’s a complicated thing,” he said.

“No one’s ever been able to do a successful deal with Iran, but we’re going to try.”

“Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will be travelling. I think they’re travelling right now to have important meetings, and we’ll see how that turns out,” he added.

Trump recently ordered a second aircraft carrier group to the Middle East amid ongoing talks with Iran over a nuclear deal.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday about a possible nuclear deal between the U.S. and Iran.

“There shall be no enrichment capability—not stopping the enrichment process, but dismantle the equipment and the infrastructure that allows you to enrich in the first place,” he said.
