The U.S. brokered a POW exchange between Russia and Ukraine on Thursday.
The exchange was announced after a two-day on Wednesday and Thursday between officials from the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia.
U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said Russia and Ukraine agreed to exchange over 300 prisoners, the first such exchange in five months.
“I congratulate all the families who are welcoming their loved ones back home. This is very important,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
Witkoff announced the U.S. made progress in its relations with Moscow.
“The United States and Russia also agreed to establish a military-to-military dialogue to be led by General Alexus Grynkewich, commander of U.S. European Command,” Witkoff wrote on X. “This channel of communication was suspended prior to the onset of this conflict and is crucial to achieving and maintaining peace.”
He added that talks will continue with additional progress anticipated in the coming weeks.
Zelensky says specific details of the trilateral talks cannot be made public yet.
He said, “Regarding the nature of the conversation and what was discussed, they talked about everything. The negotiators consider the information very sensitive and want to come and brief me in detail.”
Russia confirmed the three parties made some progress toward a peace treaty to end the war.
According to Zelensky, the next summit could take place in the U.S.
