At about 5am on August 4, a truck carrying 10 tons of pork collided with another vehicle on the highway and flipped. It was on its way from Shanghai to Shandong. The accident happened in Yancheng city, Jiangsu province.
The tailgate of the truck broke, scattering boxes of pork on and off the highway.
A “meat grabbing battle” soon ensued with hundreds of locals racing to the truck from their trucks, tricycles and cars. In the chaos, the truck’s tailgate was also stolen.
Only 3 of 10 tons of pork remained. The consignor told mainland media that the insurance company would not cover the stolen pork and would only compensate the remaining 3 tons of meat at a discount.
The truck driver was told to pay for the stolen meat. “I almost want to die! I was rear-ended by someone. He was fully responsible. I only make 800 yuan for the trip. And I’m the only bread earner in my family.”
The driver said he pleaded with the people not to take the pork, but none listened. About 200 boxes of pork were looted; even the accident-scene cleaning staff were taking the pork.
The total value of the pork is estimated at over 400,000 yuan (about $57,000) and the stolen meat is worth 280,000 yuan.
